Reykjavik Gay Pride has signed an agreement with the airline Iceland Express, which thus becomes one of the major sponsors of this year’s celebrations. Reykjavík Gay Pride is one of the biggest and most important annual events in Reykjavík and attracts close to 100,000 guests every year. For the last twelve years the Reykjavík Gay Pride has become well-known outside Iceland. Numerous foreign visitors attend the Pride event each year and the support of Iceland Express is a linked with our general effort to promote the event to foreign visitors.
Studies show that LGBT people travel even more than the average heterosexual, individuals or families, and that they prefer to come to countries like Iceland, where the human rights of LGBT people are respected. In 2011, a total of 560.000 foreign tourists visited Iceland.
It is the policy of Iceland Express to serve the LGBT community equally as well as other passengers. To strengthen this policy, in 2011, the airline became a member of International Lesbian & Gay Travel Association (ILGTA). Iceland Express will also offer special package deals for foreign visitors to Reykjavik Gay Pride in early August and package deals for Icelanders visiting similar events in other countries. In the preceding weeks and during the event their crew members are wearing rainbow scarves and ties, and the Reykjavik Gay Pride will be actively promoted aboard their aircraft.
