Other Gay Organizations

There are five  main lesbian and gay organizations in Iceland:

Samtökin ´78 (The Association 78) is the oldest organization of LGBT people in Iceland, established in 1978. Since then the Samtökin'78 has been the backbone of the gay community in the country. Samtökin'78 owns a Gay Center with a good library of books and videos and a Café-bar. The City Council supported Samtökin'78 with 100.000 USD for buying the Center. Samtökin'78 offers professional support to LGBT people and runs support groups for youth, parents and people coming out.

The office of the Gay Center is open for two hours every weekday and the Café-bar and the Library are open three nights a week. Twelve issues of the Samtökin'78 newsletter and magazine are published every year.

Samtökin'78 is a founding member of Reykjavik Gay Pride.
